The white chalky lake shore stands in sharp contrast with the lake water. Lake Abert is a hypersaline lake in southeastern Oregon and an important stop for migrating birds that stop to feed on the alkali flies and brine shrimp that have evolved in this harsh environment. This fragile ecosystem is threatened due drought and largely unrestricted water removal for irrigation which increases the salinity of the lake, and in drought years, a dry lake bed. High elevation sagebrush and short bunch grasses cover the hills with muted tones of gold and violet punctuated here and there by the dark junipers. In the valley, a small creek happily bubbles under the contrasting vibrant green aspens and willows. The distant hilltop hosts a stand of curl leaf mountain mahogany. Densely covered with sharp spines which protect it from the harsh desert sun, it is best not to touch, no matter how cuddly it appears. Although it isn't the showiest desert shrub, it packs a lot of punch in the broad range of medicinal uses. Squid have the biggest eyes on earth, with the colossal squid sporting an eye the size of a soccer ball and weighing in over 25 pounds. Those big eyes collect a lot of light and give them an advantage when hunting in low light. They also help them spot predators which would love a meal of calamari. Private collection
Oil on linen, 12" x 16". The fog rolls in as the day comes to an end, subduing the color and form of an island of shore pines at the northern end of the Oregon Dunes. Introduced European beach grass, seen here at the top of the sand rise, eats away at the sand each year, making the dunes a little smaller with every passing year. Unless we find a way to stop the spread of the grass, North America's largest coastal dunes will be replaced with an evergreen forest. Available for purchase, framed.

Visible just above the grass in the distance, a barrier dune and the mouth of the Siltcoos river, or Tsilt Coos, as known in the local Coosan language give way to the Pacific Ocean.
