Oil on hardboard, 12" x 9". The muted colors of the high desert shine with vibrance as the sun peeks over Abert Rim. This hypersaline lake in southeastern oregon is too harsh for most creatures, except the brine shrimp and alkali flies which occur in great numbers and attract multitudes of shorebirds during migration, which stop to feast on the bounty. Oil on linen panel, 8" x 8". Shades of mauve, pink, gold, and red in alternating bands color the Painted Hills near Mitchell, Oregon. A lone pioneering juniper punctuates the clear blue summer sky, and distant Sutton Mountain provides balance and horizon to this slanted landscape. Available, unframed.

Oil on hardboard, 8" x 6". The rising sun illuminates a juniper along the shore of Lake Abert, while dark storm clouds fill the horizon. The white chalky lake shore stands in sharp contrast with the lake water. Lake Abert is a hypersaline lake in southeastern Oregon and an important stop for migrating birds that stop to feed on the alkali flies and brine shrimp that have evolved in this harsh environment. This fragile ecosystem is threatened due drought and largely unrestricted water removal for irrigation which increases the salinity of the lake, and in drought years, a dry lake bed. Oil on hardboard, 12"x6". Tse'tse'ede, The Cold One (Steens Mountain) shown here rising abruptly from the western edge of the Alvord desert to an elevation of 9733' above sea level. Stretching some 50 miles north to south, it is the largest fault block mountain in the Great Basin. If you live in or near Oregon, it should be on your bucket list of places to visit. Oil on linen, 30"x24". The bare skeletons of Whitebark pine on a ridge top catch the last light of the day. Early summer finds lingering snow on distant Broken Top, with a hint of Todd lake in between. Whitebark Pine are slow-growing, long-lived trees. These skeleton trees could be 1000 years old. Oil on hardboard, 10"x8". Normally, the Alvord Desert is bone dry. A healthy rainstorm leaves standing water to catch the colors of the sunset sky, creating an otherworldly landscape. Available for purchase, unframed.

Oil on linen panel, 9"x12". Life always finds a way, as evidenced by this tree growing from a seemingly inhospitable lava flow from Belknap crater near McKenzie pass. The dark color of the lava reflects onto everything in the landscape casting cool colors on all but the sunlit needles on this mountain hemlock. Painted on site (plein air). Oil on hardboard, 8" x 6". Late summer at Hot Springs Camp on Hart Mountain as you drive in from the refuge road. High elevation sagebrush and short bunch grasses cover the hills with muted tones of gold and violet punctuated here and there by the dark junipers. In the valley, a small creek happily bubbles under the contrasting vibrant green aspens and willows. The distant hilltop hosts a stand of curl leaf mountain mahogany. The artist has camped here many times and it is her favorite place on the earth. Available for purchase, framed.

Oil on hardboard, 6" x 6". The soft and fuzzy looking Teddy Bear Cactus is anything but. Densely covered with sharp spines which protect it from the harsh desert sun, it is best not to touch, no matter how cuddly it appears. This scene is of the Cholla Cactus Garden in the lower Colorado Desert section of Joshua Tree National Park. Available for purchase, framed.

Oil on hardboard, 6" x 6". A sliver of a moon glows in the deep blue night sky just after sunset in southeastern Oregon. We think of this as moonrise, but the moon on this date was actually chasing the setting sun, dipping below the horizon just a few hours later. Private Collection

Oil on hardboard, 6" x 6". Ephedra viridis, or Green Mormon Tea as it is commonly known, grows throughout the Great Basin region. Although it isn't the showiest desert shrub, it packs a lot of punch in the broad range of medicinal uses. It is used in modern medicine to treat sinus illnesses such as hay fever, common colds, and sinusitis. Available for purchase, framed.

Oil on linen, 12" x 16". The fog rolls in as the day comes to an end, subduing the color and form of an island of shore pines at the northern end of the Oregon Dunes. Introduced European beach grass, seen here at the top of the sand rise, eats away at the sand each year, making the dunes a little smaller with every passing year. Unless we find a way to stop the spread of the grass, North America's largest coastal dunes will be replaced with an evergreen forest. Available for purchase, framed.

Oil on hardboard, 12" x 9". A lone coastal willow grows amongst the grass at the edge of the dune. Visible just above the grass in the distance, a barrier dune and the mouth of the Siltcoos river, or Tsilt Coos, as known in the local Coosan language give way to the Pacific Ocean. Oil on hardboard, 10" x 8". A big wave crashes on a rock normally occupied by resting Stellar and California sea lions on the Oregon coast. Available for purchase, unframed.

Oil on linen panel, 8" x 6". A cluster of curl leaf mountain mahogany breaks up the rolling golden grass covered hills that are found at higher elevations in southeastern Oregon. Mountain mahogany can live 1,350 years, making them some of the oldest flowering plants on earth. Available for purchase, framed.
